What is Teriyaki Chicken?
Teriyaki is a Japanese cooking technique that involves marinating and grilling or pan-frying meat in a sweet and savory sauce. The word “teriyaki” comes from “teri,” meaning shine, and “yaki,” meaning grilled or broiled. The resulting dish has a beautiful caramelized glaze and a delicious umami flavor.
Why You’ll Love This Chicken Teriyaki Recipe

Family-Friendly: The sweet and savory sauce is a crowd-pleaser, and the chicken is cooked until tender and juicy.
Meal-Prep Friendly: You can easily double the recipe and make teriyaki chicken bowls for lunch the next day.
Customizable: Feel free to adjust the ingredients to your liking! Want it spicier? Add a pinch of red pepper flakes. Craving veggies? Stir-fry some broccoli or bell peppers with the chicken.
Teriyaki Chicken Bowl – Tips
Marinate the chicken for longer for even deeper flavor. 30 minutes is ideal, but even 15 minutes will make a difference.
Want to add some veggies? Throw in broccoli florets or sliced bell peppers with the chicken during the last few minutes of cooking.
Love a little heat? Add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the marinade for a spicy kick.
Don’t overcrowd the pan when cooking the chicken. This will prevent it from searing properly and result in a steamed texture. Cook the chicken in batches if necessary.
Teriyaki Chicken Variations
Pineapple Teriyaki: Add ½ cup of chopped pineapple to the marinade for a sweeter and tropical twist.
Honey Garlic Teriyaki: Swap the brown sugar for an additional tablespoon of honey and add another clove of garlic for a more intense garlic flavor.
Sesame Teriyaki: Toast 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds in a dry skillet until fragrant. Add them to the finished sauce for a nutty crunch.
Spicy Teriyaki: Add a sriracha drizzle or a teaspoon of Gochujang (Korean chili paste) to the marinade for a fiery kick.
How to Serve Teriyaki Chicken?
It is a versatile dish that goes well with many sides. Here are some of my favorites:
Classic: Steamed white rice or brown rice is a perfect accompaniment.
Noodles: Lo mein, chow mein, or rice noodles add a textural contrast.
Veggies: Broccoli, carrots, snap peas, green beans, or a stir-fry mix are all great choices. You can steam, roast, or stir-fry your veggies.
Salad: A light salad with a simple vinaigrette is a refreshing side.
